1955 Press Photo Linehan Culkin Antarctica Seals

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: Interest In Science--Seals loll around on the antarctic ice, not the least bit interested in scientists who study the earth's magnetic field in the background. The observers, members of the team aboard the US Navy icebreaker Atka during the recently completed exploratory tour of the antarctic, are Rev. Daniel Linehan, Boston College, and Charles Culkin of the US Navy hydrographic office. This picture was made by New York Times correspondent Salter Sullivan, who accompanied the expedition.
