Caption: A crucial time for our schools. Schools need help, but are millages the answer? Advocates of prayer in the public schools are inspired by a variety of motives, some well-meaning, all mistaken. their crusade may be fueled by the narrow desire to enforce conformity, the wistful notion that school prayer will restore some golden age of morality, the assumption that the prayers to be offered will be their kind of prayers, as if the New Testament, in particular, was part of everybody's cultural of philosophical baggage.
