Caption: MODEL OF OUTER SPACE SATELLITE, Dr. Allen V. Astin, Director of the national bureau of standards, examines a full scale model of the earth's first man made Satellite. The shiny silver ball measures 20 inches in diameter and when fully loaded with weigh about 21 pounds. Rods projecting from the sphere are radio aerials which will be used to transmit secrets of outer space back to earth. The model went to display at New York Coliseum for the 11th annual conference of the Instrument society of America.
