Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: The S-45 Ionosphere Beacon Satellite, shown in this photo released by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is expected to be orbited within the next few hours. Similar in configuration to Explorer VII and VIII, the satellite structure is 30 inches in diameter and 24 inches high. Total weight of the payload is 75 pounds. The satellite will be placed into orbit by a Junoll booster. Once in orbit, it will transmit six frequencies to allow experimenters all over the world to pursue Ionospheric studies by ground based observation of the satellite signals.
