Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: Margaret Snow was a member of the Moonwatch team here that was credited by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory with being the first to make a naked eye sighting of the United States? satellite, the Explorer. Here she shows how telescopes were used in combination with radio tracking to locate the object. Another member of the team, shown with Miss Snow, is Boyd Mathias. Five members of the team sighted the satellite.
