1958 Press Photo Diagram Satellite ExplorerIV Orbit

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: The Defense Department released this diagram in Washington, July 26, after announcement that a new satellite, Explorer IV, is in orbit. The chart shows the part of the satellite on its first four flights over the earth. Explorer IV is streaking across the more populated northern latitudes of the world, including Russia. Scientists said the orbital band is more than 30 degrees wider than those of earlier Explorers.
