1961 Press Photo Vandenberg CA Launches Discoverer XX

Caption: VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Feb.17--DISCOVERER XX LAUNCHED-A Thor ballistic missile with a more powerful engine and using more powerful fuel blasts skyward from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., with Discoverer XX in its nose. The Satellite, larger and heavier than any of its predecessor, was successfully put into a polar orbit. Four days later, if all goes well, a capsule will be ejected and an attempt made to recover it over the Pacific near Hawaii.
