Description
Caption: Wham! Sledge hammer can't break this glass-fiber reinforced synthetic rubber ball, several of which helped launch the Explorer satellite. B. F. Goodrich Industrial Products Co., Akron, disclosed Thursday that the spheres were part of the pneumatic system for the first stage of the Jupiter-C rocket. The company said the new rubber contains air pressures up to 3,000 pounds a square inch. Apex Reinforced Plastics Co., Cleveland, winds the balls with 39,200 miles of glass filament.
