1958 Press Photo Fred Elmer Drawing Satellite Device

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: Cocoa Beach, Fla. - Dr. Fred Elmer, bottom, assistant section chief of research analysis for Jet Propulsion Laboratories, points to a drawing showing a safety triggering device used in connections with the firing of the first U.S. satellite. Behind him is Col. L.H. Orman of the missile test center here and at top is Capt. Henry C. Paul who pushed the button to insure the start of the second stage rockets to put the satellite into orbit. Capt. Paul's triggering was designed as a backstop for that done by Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger. They appeared at a press conference here today.
