Caption: The Army's Jupiter C missle pours out flame as it roars skyward last night to put the first U.S. satellite into outer space. Seam from the intense heat rises from the launching pad at the Air Forcemissile test Center. The satellite was perched atop the blunt nose shown here above the top black mark. this picture was made from a distance of approximately one and one half miles.
