Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: Explorer IV goes into orbit - Map gives first general orbital path of Explorer IV, America's newest satellite, after it was carried aloft today from Cape Canaveral, Fla., by Jupiter-C rocket. The satellite was fired in a northeasterly direction, orbiting across the more populated northern latitudes of the world, including Russia. The Explorer IV, weighing 38.43, is the heaviest yet launched by the United States. The 80-inch-long satellite is similar in shape to previous Explorers but is 7 pounds heavier.
