1960 Press Photo Cape Canaveral Tiros weather launch

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: America launched 11/23 a Tiros weather satellite with two television cameras, designed to give the first daily weather forecasts and storm warnings based on cloud cover pictures taken from a station in space. Map spots its projected course. The 280-pound satellite was launched in the nose of a Thor-Delta rocket as the U.S. bid for its 14th space success of the year.
