Caption: Lawrence S Jones, new chief executive officer of Independence Bank of Detroit, is a Philadelphia banker who just came to Detroit to aid Independence, a struggling bank which is this year celebrating its 28th anniversary. Independence was once the only black owned bank in the Detroit area; now, though, there are two others, which may contribute to increased competition for business in the niche in which Independence is operating.
