Caption: The kinds of animals used in lab experiments prompt different degrees of outcry. The use of beagles by the U.S. Army in poison gas research in 1974 caused such an outcry, (above) funding was curtailed. The government of India has banned export of the rhesus monkey (a popular animal at the Detroit Zoo) to the U.S. because of what it terms inhuman treatment. Meanwhile, a few cosmetic firm workers quit in protest over tests that cause rabbits great discomfort but did not complain about the thousands of guinea-pigs and rats that are routinely put to death in acute-toxicity tests.
