Caption: Pontiac - Auto- 1950-59ENGINE SPEED AUTOMATICALLY MATCH TERRAINIllustrating engine and transmission performance "tailored" to driving conditions are these 1952 Pontiac's shown in boulevard and mountain road settings, both traveling at 45 miles per hour. In the hill-climbing car the engine is turning at 2500 rpm in high, using the extra performance setting of the Dual-Range transmission. In the level-driving scene, at the same speed, the engine is turning over at 1700 rpm, giving a gliding, "coasting" ride. Here the Hydra-Matic Transmission is set for the normal driving range. By developing a power train combining high compression engines, two transmissions ranges an an unusually low rear axle ratio, engineers have aimed at maximum economical performance whatever the driving conditions.
