Description
Caption: One of the attractions designed to draw Super Bowl fans away from the Silver dome and into thecity of Pontiac is a five-block strip of Saginaw Street, renamed Bourbon Street North and soonto bear some resemblance to its New Orleans counterpart. The strip, named for the action street in the famed city where five Super Bowls have been heldwill include Can-Can Alley, Soul Emporium the Rat's Hole, Top of the Marquee and Basin StreetBasement within its 31 renovated buildings. The facades of once-boarded buildings have been reworked by local artists who volunteered theirtime as part of Pontiac's host committee effort.Special state legislation will allow the strip temporary liquor licenses from its formal opening Jan.11 through Jan,25, the day after the Super Bowl.Cars will be barred along the strip with traffic limited to pedestrians and those wishing a nostalgic ride in a horse-drawn buggy.Artists Assunta (Sue) Sera of Bloomfield Hills and Gloria Kruszka of Washington discuss converting one of the downtown buildings to look like ones along the famous New Orieans Street.
