1981 Press Photo Lillian Kiszlowski church

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: There were picket signs, some of them sharp with irony, and there were tears, like those of lifelong choir members Lillian Kiszlowski, but months of demonstrations, vigils and personal anguish ultimately failed. As the artifacts of the church were removed last July, the icons of immaculate Conception stood incongruously in the summer sunlight, some of them, like the life-sized image of St. Anthony, hauled off unceremoniously in pickup trucks to be dispatched to other churches.
