Caption: Until recently the town of Safwan, just north of the Iraq-Kuwait border, was nearly deserted. Some residents have returned, fleeing the righting in Basra. March 21, 1991-This town, just north of the Iraqi-Kuwait border was nearly deserted until recently after most of the 27,000 residents fled during allied bombing in late January. Some have now returned, fleeing the fighting in Basra, though many homes are in ruins and their is a serious lack of food, water and medical care. Photo by Pauline Lubens/Detroit Free Press).
