1954 Press Photo Alexander Macomb County naming

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: Macomb County, Michigan's third most populous county, was named after Gen. Alexander Macomb, a gold-medal winner in the War of 1812. His heroism came during the Battle of Plattsburg. A gifted poet and painter as well as a heroic soldier, Macomb loved to laugh and enjoyed hearing a good story. Stories took his mind off his problems. His favorite concerned the day a British deserter appeared in the American camp with his commanding officer's horse. He had stolen the home to make his getaway.
