Caption: CANCEL EXCOMMUNICATIONS OF NINE CENTURIES AGO--Pope Paul VI listens as Augustine Cardinal Bea reads the Papal brief formally cancelling the 11th century excommunication of Patriarch Michael Caerularius at today's session of the Ecumenical Council at Vatican City. The excommunication was one of the reciprocal actions that led to the break between the Roman and Orthodox churches, and today's brief signifies another step toward reconciliation of the two churches.
