Description
Caption: DOUBLE DUTY CANVAS -- The century-old art mystery of two long-missing Thomas Jefferson portraits by renowned colonial artist Gilbert Stuart appears solved by these two paintings, one a double-duty original and the other a recreation of a hidden image. At left is the second of two portraits of Jefferson painted from life by Stuart in 1805. At right is a modern recreation by artist Orland Campbell of a first Jefferson life portrait painted underneath the second on the same original canvas. It was discovered by x-ray studies after the long-missing canvas turned up in 1937. Both original and recreation will be unveiled at Amherst, Mass., Friday.
