Caption: LOS ANGELES - Most TV shows are produced to make a bck. Some are driven by artistic or political passion. Very few are as intensely personal as "In a New Light ll, " an AIDS special airing at 8 p.m. Saturday of ABC (WXYZ-TV, Channel 7).The show's executive producer, Joe Lovett, 48, has tracked the AIDS epidemic since 1983 when, as one of the few openly gay producers in network news, he gave AIDS a prime-time showcase on ABC's "20/20.""My friends were the first people hit," said Lovett.And the ABC executive responsible for the program, Phil Beuth, 61, watched as his son, Barry, died of AIDS in 1989 at age 34.
