1978 Press Photo Kent Hubbell architect tent umbrella

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: Kent Hubbell, assistant professor of architecture at the University of Michigan, has been designing tent-like structures as art for the environment. These fabric structures are designed primarily to provide temporary shelter for short-term public events. At the 1978 Ann Arbor art fair, Hubbell unveiled "Superumbrella", a huge, free-standing canopy that opens and closes like a giant umbrella.
