CAPTION: Michigan became a territory in 1805. Here is the Act that divided the Indiana territory "into two separate governments" in the Second Session of the Eighth Congress. it was approved on January 11, 1805, by President Thomas Jefferson, whose signature may be seen at the left. A photostat of the Act is shown in the Library of Congress exhibit commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Territory of Michigan that opened on October 4, 1955..
