CAPTION: Detroit’s interest in classical music may be lagging. But when it comes to popular support, the Michigan Opera Theatre is dancing rings around its colleagues. To a casual observer, Detroit might seem to be in a cultural lag where classical music is concerned. The Michigan Chamber Orchestra, for instance, was forced to cancel much of its current season because it couldn’t rustle up enough subscribers. There are empty seats for many Detroit Symphony Orchestra concerts at Ford Auditorium.
