CAPTION: Among these stories, taped by Girardin's friend Maury Kelman, a professor of law at Wayne State University, was one about Vera Brown. A Times legend inher own right, Vera worked at the Detroit News from 1918 to 1930, when she joined the Times, staying until it closed in 1960. She died in 1976 at the age of 80. She was the last old sob sister reporters as tough and as salty as her male colleagues..
