Caption: (NY8-Aug. 23) GOING TO MOSCOW -- Czechoslovak President Ludvik Svoboda announced today he is going to Moscow with a delegation of Czech leaders to discuss the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia with Russian leaders. (AP Wirephoto) (see AP wire story) (js60600fls) '68This visit to Moscow was marked as the highlight of his career after refusing to ratify the new Soviet-installed government and demanding the release of Dubcek. During World War I and World War II, Svoboda was a member of Czechoslovakia units that fought alongside the Russians against the Germans. He became Czechoslovak commanding general during World War II. After the war, he was appointed defense minister in the predominantly non-Communist post-war government of President Eduard Benes and played a key role in the 1948 Communist takeover.
