Description

Caption: COPPER COUNTRY OUTPOST--Old Fort Wilkins, in upper Michigan's Keweenaw peninsula, looks the same as it did when built in 1844. Even the fort buildings are furnished as they were when US troops manned this stronghold against Indian attacks. A popular vacation travel attraction, Fort Wilkins is located in a 190-acre state park between lake Superior and Lake Fanny Hooe. The park includes a museum filled with relics of military life and copper mining in early Michigan.
