Caption: Suit says inmate died after care was denied. The family of a Detroit man who died f a heart attack in the Oakland County Jail in 1989 is suing the sheriff?s department and the county, saying authorities needed medical treatment. It is the second lawsuit in less than a year against the Oakland County Sheriff Department charging the sick inmates have died after being ignored by deputies and medical staff. The most recent suit, filed last month in US District Court in Detroit, claims that on Dec.12 and 13, 1989, Hubert Sanders, 46, a Detroit mechanic and father of three, repeatedly asked for medical attention while awaiting trail on a larceny charge. The family is seeking more than $1 million. According to the suit, other inmates said Sanders complained of chest pain and asked for help at least seven times in 19 hours. After collapsing in his cell, Sanders was taken Dec.13 to Pontiac General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.(Jan 4 1993, Jan 2 19930.
