Caption: Historic old Ford Gibson Stockade is one of Oklahoma's favorite tourist attractions. It is only 51 miles from Tulsa, a terminus on the Will Rogers and Turner Turnpikes. Construction of Fort Gibson began in 1824 and for many years it was the most important military post on the western frontier. In the 1840's, more newspaper datelines originated at Fort Gibson than any other community west of the Mississippi.
