1973 Press Photo John C. Calhoun Vice President

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: John C. Calhoun, vice president of the United States under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson beginning in 1825, was the only vice president ever to have resigned until Vice President Spiro Agnew left office Wednesday. Calhoun, once considered Jackson's probable successor, quit after he won election to the Senate in 1832 following his break with Jackson. He was noted as a defender of state's rights against the Jacksonian concept of a strong central government.
