Caption: When Wayne County Circuit Judge William J. Giovan isn't judging people at the bench, he is often judging them as possible portrait subjects.The judge has been shooting pictures since 1970 and has won several honors for his photos. Giovan, 44, is interested in landscapes and architecture, but his favorite photographic pursuit is portraits."The most beautiful landscape can't match what lies within a human being," he says. "Photographing people is one way of capturing part of that."Giovan belongs to the Eastpointe Photographic Society and submits his best work in the club's monthly competitions and in inter-club contests in the Detroit area.Among his favorite portraits not shown here are those taken of actors at the Grosse Pointe Theatre, of which he is a member. Giovan also is proud of the portraits he's taken of 35 judges which grace the walls of a Circuit Court conference room.His hobbies don't stop with photography. He also enjoys acting, singing in a barbershop chorus and working with stained glass. One pursuit he has given up is fencing.
