Description
Caption: Harbortown on East Jefferson under construction in 1986. The project was built without support from local banks.JEFFREY T. FANCHERMidlandWhy blame the banks?WHEN SOME banks in the United States were going under due to faulty loans, the system of banking in America was attacked and books hit the stands shouting, like Henny Penney. "The banks are failing! The banks are failing!"Now the banks in the Detroit area are being stoned for not supporting the development of Detroit. Where does the money come from? Do people think that banks have buckets from which they dip into to make dreams come true for everyone? What has happened to the American marketplace? Why are the banks of America only responsible for making dreams come true? What about industries that abandoned cities and jobs and turned to greener tax areas? Where is the outcry at the cost of public housing?Stockholders have invested in our banks. They have dreams they want fulfilled, too.
