Caption: John Huarte's rise to Heisman stardom was most unusual. Until his final year at Notre Dame, he had never won a varsity letter! Recovering from a shoulder injury to win the number one quarterback position as a senior, Huart and teammate Jack Snow led the fighting Irish to a 9-1 record. In the process Huarte outdistanced five other candidates to win the Heisman Trophy. His remarkable ability to excel and overcome obstacles forms a key segment in The 1983 Heisman Trophy Award television special. Candid interviews with Heisman winners Johnny Rogers, Doak Walker and Joe Bellino combine with dramatic football action to illustrae the rich history of the Heisman Trophy and the continuing search to be the best. The hour-long TV program includes the live announcement of the 1983 Heisman winner. The special will be broadcast via satellite on Saturday, December 3. (Editors: The special will be shown live in the time zones - 7:00PM, ET; 6:00 PM, CT; 5:00 PM, MT; and 4:00 PM, PT). The program is written and directed by Bud Greenspan.
