1984 Press Photo house gas explosion debris Vaughan Ave

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: A gas explosion destroyed a vacant house and seriously injured a man and his five-year-old son as they were getting out of a car to visit a relative Tuesday in a northwest Detroit neighborhood near Henry Ford High School. Residents as far as a mile away felt the blast at the home in the 19800 block of Vaughan Avenue near Pembroke. Others from a next-door house were cut by flying glass. Windows were broken in houses throughout the neighborhood. One of two sealed and locked gas meters at the home had been tampered with, according to Senior Fire Chief Raymond Andrzejak.
