Description
Caption: By Charlotte RobinsonFree Press Staff WriterIrene Graves has been a member of the NAACP for 62 years - ever since her mother bought 50-cent memberships for her and her brothers in 1912.You can see the entire history of the organization through her eyes, it is a history that she helped to create."Don't write about me," she begged. "I haven't done that much."She has ONLY sold hundreds of $100 tickets over the years to the NAACP Freedom Fund dinner, an annual affair that helps pay the bill of the national organization .. only persuaded countless people to join .. only served on the board for 10 years .. only risked advancement in her 42-year career as a school teach in Detroit to fight against school segregation and for promotions of black teachers within the system.Mrs. Graves: 'I sure will help raise the money ..'.
