Leaning much more to her ancestral Spain than to England, Mary insisted upon marrying Philip in 1554 notwithstanding the violent disapproval of her subjects. To Mary the alliance was highly romantic until she learned quickly enough, that Philip was indifferent: to Philip it was only a military and political expedient.
