Caption: This old woodcarving shows Griswold Street, looking north from Jefferson Avenue in 1900s. In those days, telephone poles contained many organs to carry the open wire telephone lines serving this growing city of Detroit. not long afterwards, telephones cable replaced the wire in the downtown area and was placed underground. The Detroit Free Press Editorial Rooms, then at Larned and Shelby Sts., had the phone number 200 2R. It took two rings from The Detroit Free Press will receive a new phone number--222-6400. In that new number will be the latest type of telephones are available.
