Cranbrook Academy of Art President Roy Slade doesn't have any. Every Dec. 26 he hosts his annual Boxing Day party. Slade passed out written explanations of the English Boxing Day tradition to guests because he was tired of explaining it. Among other traditions, in Great Britain owners of country estates used to invite villagers into their homes the day after Christmas. After a brief visit everyone left with a box of leftover goodies.Slade's guests ate the treats right there and wandered through his new home, the former residence of Cranbrook sculptor Carl Milles. Slade's previous residence is now the Eliel Saarinen museum.Overheard: "Roy treats everyone like family," said Helen Guittard, next year's chair of the Guy Fawkes Ball benefit, "that's why everyone loves working with him."Headturner: Barbara Erb, wearing a red Santa Claus stocking cap and a pendant of a creche. "I have a collection from 51 different countries," said Erb of the creche.Spotted in the crowd: Ray Fleming; David and Susan Lanciault, who became a new bride and a grandmother during the year; Doris and Irving Burton; John Mills; Jan and Bob Swanson; Mark Jones; Jean and Bob Schuler; Debbie Erb; Wendy Elaine Erb; Barb Hogan; Shirley and Frank Piku; and Page Yager.By Marj Jackson Levin.
