Caption: How U.S. flag evolved over the years -- These are four flags used during the early days of the United States. At top left, is the Gran Union, or Cambridge flag, used by Washington in 1776 near Cambridge, Mass. To right: the Betsy Ross flag with its circular field of 13 stars. Lower right: the Fort McHenry flag with 15 scattered stars, used during the War of 1812. Lower left: the flag of 1818, the year when the style of the flag was fixed by law except for the disposition of the stars on the blue field.
