Caption: Sixten Ehrling (1963-73): The shy, Swedish-born conductor was wrongly interpreted as aloof and impersonal, but his 10-year tenure was marked by superb performances of a wide repertoire, including 24 world premieres. Ehriling also inaugurated the DSO's summer home Meadow Brook and continues to produce impressive results in his regular DSO guest-conducting stints, the next of which takes place at Meadow Brook in July. He is the head of the orchestral department at Juilliard School of Music in New York.
