Caption: Forest Hills, NY, Sept. 5, 1972—Fought Off Challenge—Stan Smith of Pasadena, Calif., hits a backhand return to Andres Gimeno of Spain in Tuesday action at the US Open tennis tournament at Forest Hills, NY. Smith, the No. 1 seed of the tourney, had to fight off a strong upset bid by the Spanish veteran to finally win, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
