Stars attending the opening passed throught American Legion picket lines denouncing Ferrer and John Huston, the film's producer, as Communist sympathizers. Earlier in the day Ferrer had denounced the Soviet Union and Paul Robeson's acceptance of a Stalin "Peace Award" (AP Wirephoto).
