Guns and bayonets at the ready, US Marines search for Japanese snipers and straggles in a palm grove on Guadalcanal Island, shortly after the First Marine Division landed on the 90 mile stretch of rotted jungle, rain forest and broken ridges on August 7, 1942. Throughout the next three years of war, there was to be no other battle involving Americans in which the bayonet was to be used so extensively.
