1972 Press Photo California desert pocket mice aboard the Apollo 17 mission

Five pocket mice like this one from the California desert will be inside a sealed aluminum canister on Wednesday night when the astronauts blast off on the Apollo 17 mission. The canister, which contains food and an environmental control system token the mice alive, is packed in a compartmental control system to keep the mice alive, is packed in a compartment aboart Apollo 17 command ship. On return to earth mice will be killed and their brains examined to determine how cosmic radiation has affected brain tissue.
