1968 Press Photo Heavily armed assault support patrol boats at Mekong River

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Heavily armed assault support patrol boats move along a detect tributary of the Mekong River delta south of Saigon. The patrol boats are dragging the bottom to detect any enemy command detonated mines. Behind the boats come troop-laden landing craft. When contact is made with Viet Cong elements, the landing craft put the troops ashore. The patrol boats add heavy fire power support. The patrol boat at center background, M-92-1, has been dubbed the "Monitor," after its Civil War counterpart. It has also earned the nickname of "battleship of the Delta."
