Description
Birmingham, Alabama. Churches: Catholic. St. George's. St. George's Byzantine Catholic Church , which was dedicated as a shrine this week, was the first Catholic church in the world where an English mass was said. The ruling of the Second Vatican Council that Catholic churches could celebrate the mass in the language rather than just the Latin was still a decade away, but in Birmingham, a Catholic priest already had decided to start saying the mass in English.

Photo measures 10 x 8 inches. Photo is dated 04-28-1979.
