The University of Alabama in Birmingham graduated its largest class ever, nearly 3,200 students, Sunday in the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Coliseum. University of Alabama Birmingham President S. Richardson Hill Junior said the University was also awarding the largest number of doctorates ever at the 10th anniversary graduation In his welcoming remarks, Hill said that "growth and change have been hallmarks at UAB." He noted that since 1969 enrollment has grown from 5,400 to this past fall's mark of about 14,000 students. The year of 1969 was the school's first as an independent university within the University of Alabama system. Hill said Sunday's 3,200 graduates compared with 600 who received degrees in 1970 as part of University of Alabama Birmingham's first graduation class. University of Alabama Birmingham has contributed to the economy of the Birmingham area, too, Hill said, including its role as the city's largest employer and the fourth largest employer in the state.
