Caption: Earl D. Butz, former assistant secretary during the Eisenhower years, delivers remarks to a news conference Thursday in Washington after he was named by President Nixon to succeed Secretary of Agriculture Clifford M. Hardin who resigned. Butz is now on the staff of Purdue University. Hardin said he's excepting a position with the Ralston Purina Co. of St. Louis.
