Caption: Cincinnati, June 26--Establishes Church Precedent--Rev. Joseph H. Evans, pastor of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Chicago, today became the first negro ever elected to a major salaried office within the United Church of Christ The Rev. Evans paused for a cup of coffee as he received congratulations after defeating the Rev. Dr. Robert F.R. Peters, New York, assistant to the president of the United Church.
